Heat Stroke In Dogs & Cats

Prevent Your Pet From Overheating

Prevent Your Pet From Overheating

Heat stroke occurs when an animal's internal temperature gets too high, and they are unable to cool itself down. This can be fatal if not treated immediately. At Not Just 4 Paws Animal Hospital in Canyon Lake, CA, we understand how important your pet's health is to you and we are here to help. We have one of the best animal hospitals in California, where we provide excellent pet care services. If you notice any of the following signs, your pet may be suffering from heat stroke, and you should bring them into our animal hospital immediately.

Heavy Panting

Heavy panting is one of the first and most common signs of heat stroke in dogs and cats. This is caused by the animal's attempt to cool themselves down by evaporating moisture from their lungs. On a hot day, you may notice your pet panting more than usual, but if they are panting excessively or having trouble catching their breath, this is a sign of heat stroke.

Excessive Thirst Resulting from Dehydration

If your pet is drinking more water than usual or seems unusually thirsty, this could be a sign of heat stroke. Dehydration is caused by the loss of body fluids and can be very dangerous, so it's important to keep an eye on your pet's water intake. You should have a veterinarian check your pet if they seem excessively thirsty.

Glazed Eyes

When an animal is suffering from heatstroke, its eyes may appear glassy or glazed over. This is a sign that they are not getting enough oxygen and their organs are beginning to shut down. While it may be difficult to tell if your pet's eyes are glazed over, this is a serious sign and you should have a veterinarian check them immediately.

Increased Body Temperature

If you notice that your pet's body temperature is higher than normal, this is a sign of heat stroke. You can take your pet's temperature yourself with a rectal thermometer, but it's always best to have a veterinarian do it. A normal dog or cat's temperature is between 101 and 102.5-degrees Fahrenheit, but if your pet's temperature is above 104 degrees, they are suffering from heat stroke.
