Kidney Failure in Cats

Kidney Failure in Cats

No one wants to think about a time when their cat isn't around. Cats become a significant part of your life, to the point where they are considered part of the family. Unfortunately, things can happen, so it's important to be as prepared as possible.

Kidney Failure of Cat

One of those things is chronic kidney disease. At Not Just 4 Paws Animal Hospital in Canyon Lake, our veterinarians are here to provide you with the resources and guidance you need to care for your cat with kidney failure. If you have any questions, our vet staff is here to help.

What is Kidney Failure?

The kidneys play a vital role in your cat's body, including filtering and removing waste through urine. They also help maintain the right balance of water and electrolytes, and produce hormones for red blood cell production. Kidney failure is the result of chronic kidney disease, often occurring when the organs can't function properly.

What Are the Types of Kidney Failure?

In addition to chronic kidney disease, there is another type of kidney failure known as Acute Kidney Failure, often referred to as acute renal failure (ARF). ARF occurs when your pet's kidneys become damaged, usually within a few hours or days, due to poisoning or a quick-acting infection. Some cats can regain kidney function to a degree after receiving the correct treatment, quality care, and some time to recover fully. However, approximately 50% of ARF cases are terminal, even with treatment.

What Are the Symptoms of End-Stage Kidney Failure?

So, how do you know if your pet is experiencing chronic kidney disease? Some symptoms in cats can include:

  • A sudden decrease in appetite
  • Sluggishness
  • Vomiting (sometimes with blood)
  • Diarrhea (sometimes with blood)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Seizures

Below are signs that your cat is in the end stage of kidney failure:

  • Refusal to eat
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Changes in behavior (withdrawn, hiding, irritable)
  • Seizures
  • Confusion (excessive pacing)

If you suspect that your pet is experiencing chronic kidney disease, please schedule an appointment at Not Just 4 Paws Animal Hospital. A member of our experienced veterinary team will examine your cat to determine the issues and create a treatment plan.
